Containment

Francesca Nrecaj-Hecht is a New York–based artist working in painting and sculptural relief. She creates tactile works that explore containment, rupture, preservation, and exposure through layered textiles, plaster, acrylic, industrial materials, and sculptural surfaces.

Her practice gives form to the emotional terrain of lived experience, building surfaces the way experiences accumulate — through layering, covering, tearing, and repair. Informed by personal history and Albanian textile traditions surrounding dowry-making, domestic ritual, and inherited handwork, she treats the surface as something that remembers. Draped forms, veiled structures, reflective materials, and ruptured openings recur throughout her work, creating a language of restraint and release.

Rather than illustrating emotion, Francesca asks materials to carry it. Her surfaces feel both bodily and architectural: wounded, preserved, and quietly defiant. They rupture without fully breaking, expose without surrendering, and carry memory while continuing to hold their form.
